Driving railway vehicles

Competence to drive railway vehicles and vehicles operated using other guided transport systems (“vehicles”)

  • The professional competence of persons driving a vehicle is governed by Act No. 266/1994 Coll., the Railways Act, as amended, and Decree No. 16/2012 Coll., as amended.
  • The medical fitness of persons driving a vehicle is assessed in accordance with Decree No. 101/1995 Coll., as amended.
  • Vehicles on a local, tramway, trolleybus and special rail system, a cable installation or within a siding can only be driven by persons holding a valid driver's licence to drive the relevant vehicle (Section 45(1) of Act No. 266/1994 Coll., the Railways Act).
  • Only persons with a valid train driver's licence and a valid train driver's certificate may drive a train on the national and regional railways (Section 46b(1) of Act No. 266/1994 Coll., the Railways Act).

The Rail Authority verifies

  • the general professional competence to obtain a train driver's licence
  • the professional competence to obtain a driver's licence to drive vehicles within a siding or on a local railway
  • the professional competence to obtain a driver's licence to drive vehicles on cableway installations or to operate a cableway system

The Rail Authority issues

  • train drivers' licences
  • drivers' licences to drive vehicles within a siding or on a local railway
  • drivers' licences to drive vehicles on cableway installations or to operate a cableway system

Any person may become a (train) driver who:

  • has reached the age of 20 years;
  • has attained a minimum level of education (completed secondary education with an apprenticeship certificate in mechanical, electrical, civil engineering or transport engineering);
  • is fit to drive a railway vehicle or a vehicle operated using other guided transport systems, i.e. has not been convicted upon a final and conclusive judgement of a driving offence or of another deliberate offence where, in view of driving and the applicant's personality, there is a risk that he or she will commit the same or a similar offence while driving such a vehicle and has not been sentenced by a court to a driving ban;
  • is physically and mentally fit to drive a railway vehicle or a vehicle operated using other guided transport systems;
  • has completed the prescribed training - a course of general professional competence at an accredited training centre to obtain a train driver's licence, or, as the case may be, has completed theoretical knowledge training, training in a traction vehicle repair shop and driving training to obtain a licence to drive a vehicle within a siding or on a local railway;
  • has successfully passed the exam with the Rail Authority;
  • has paid the administrative fee to the Rail Authority;
  • after obtaining a train driver's licence, has completed a course of special professional competence at an accredited training centre to obtain a train driver's certificate;
  • has successfully passed the examination on special professional competence with the transport undertaking.
